What they feel when you're silent
Tell me if you've ever experienced this:
Scenario 1:
You call a friend, needing to share about a struggle you have. You start sharing; she's hearing what you're saying but she's ignoring your emotional needs of warmth, depth & understanding. She means well, so she asks some well-meaning questions, but you don't feel heard or supported at all. She's entirely incapable of offering that kind of support you need. Not because she's bad; she's simply limited.
You hang up the phone feeling exposed, worse and depleted. The little bit of energy you had is now gone.
You feel even more alone.
Scenario 2:
You call a different friend and share the same struggle. Within a few second she says "wow, I can hear the sadness in your voice." As you talk, and she listens, you begin to feel lighters. "It sounds so hard. It makes so much sense" are some of the words she say... but it's not the words that are comforting you;
It's more about her energy.
Her presence.
Her emotional capacity.
She has space to hear what you're saying, and has the ability to hold the enormity of the pain you're experiencing.
You hang up the phone feeling less alone. Still in pain, but like your load is a tad bit lighter. You can breath better.
We are all human. Therapists and Clients, alike.
We all need connection, support and care.
The scenario above is the story of how our clients come in to our offices.
Desperate to be met and understood. And, terrified of feeling dropped.
They are holding stories, they are holding emotions, they are holding pain and they need us to hold it.
Not just to say the "right words" or to offer an intervention. They need us to sit with them in their silence. In their experience. Be with them in it so they are less alone
And only once we do that, can we offer them a road to healing.
---
Your client will either feel held by your presence, or feel dropped into an abyss.
Are you offering Scenario 1 above or Scenario 2?
The way we embody Scenario 2 is by doing our own work by:
>> getting well-trained, engaging in our own therapy, and, having people in our life who hold space for us.
>> getting expert consultation on clinical cases so we can find the balance between "being" and "doing" in therapy.
So, if you're a therapist who:
has a number of years of training under your belt, have advanced skills...
and are looking to widen and deepen your capacity to "hold"your clients
Offer more focused therapy sessions so your clients experience real relief, without wasting time going in circles...
My Trauma Training Cohort is the answer for you.
